Bhopal History

Bhopal History

Introduction

As a region, history of Bhopal is much older. Their are many evidence indicates towards existence human society in this region. Bhimbetka rock shelters is one of such popular evidence. Their are many similar sites in Bhopal city area as well as in 50kms radius. In 2nd BC, this region was under rule of Mauryan dynasty and was the time of great emperor Ashoka. Nearby pilgrimage and tourist site of Sanchi was established at same time. After Maurya dynasty many other rulers and dynasties have their control over this region like Shung dynasty, Satavahana, Kushan, Kshatrap etc. If we talk about particular township with the name of Bhopal city, than records indicates that Bhopal has been founded by famous King Bhoja from Parmara dynasty (1000-1055 AD). Raja Bhoja ruled over this region from his capital located in Dhar which lies in western end of Madhya Pradesh state. Bhopal name is believed to have been derived from "Bhojpal". During Parmara dynasty rule, Raja Bhoj made a cyclopean dam on Betwa river, close to the site of Bhojpur temple site and laid the foundation of a township near the site which was called Bhojpal. Name can be understood as "Bhoj" is name of King and "Pal" means Dam. Modern Bhopal is founded by ruler Dost Mohammad Khan (1672-1728 AD). He was originally from Pashtun region (border area of Afganistan & Pakistan). He was member of Mughal army during rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. After his death, in 1709 AD, Dost Mohammad Khan established his own kingdom in the form of Bhopal state. So both Raja Bhoj & Dost Mohammad Khan owes the credit of Bhopal city.

History of Bhopal

Bhopal lies in central of Madhya Pradesh state. If we talk about the history of whole region, Sanchi and Vidisha are much older than Bhopal. Sanchi history is of 2nd century BC when their is already established Vidisha township was existing. It means Bhopal city was established much after its nearby places like Sanchi, Vidisha, Gyraspur etc. When we talk about particular Bhopal history, two prominent names came for reference i.e Parmara dynasty ruler Raja Bhoja and Pustan invader Dost Mohammad Khan. Bhopal history is mixture of Hindu and Muslim culture which is reflection of rule of these two prominent names. Raja Bhoja was a Hindu ruler where as Dost Mohammad Khan was Muslim ruler. It is believed that Bhopal has been founded by King Bhoja from Parmara dynasty (1000-1055 AD). Raja Bhoja ruled over this region from his capital in Dhar which is located in western end of Madhya Pradesh state. During that time, Bhopal was pronounced as Bhojpal. Name can be understood as "Bhoj" is name of King and "Pal" means Dam which is constructed on Betwa river at the site of Bhojpur temple, about 30kms south west of current city. After Parmar dynasty, nothing remarkable done till 18th century due to which no better information of this period was available. In 18th century, Bhopal region was part of Gond Kingdom who were ruling in Central India from Jabalpur region. Gond kingdom is of tribal society living in forested areas of Vindhaychal and Satpura ranges. They are the real native tribes of Central India and it is the unique kingdom of tribal peoples. Modern Bhopal is founded by ruler Dost Mohammad Khan (1672-1728 AD). He played important role in modern history of Bhopal. He was member of Mughal army during rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. After his death, in 1709 AD, Dost Mohammad Khan took Berasia estate on lease and later included more nearby areas to establish his own kingdom in the form of Bhopal state. Marks of his rule can be seen in Islamnagar region of Bhopal city. After Dost Mohammad Khan's death in 1728, Nizam had its influence in this region. Mughals had their influence in Central India since 16th century with fall of actual Gonds rule and establishment of dummy rulers. Their influences ended in 1737 AD with defeat by Marathas from west India. In 1818, after Third Anglo-Maratha war, Bhopal came under British India control but ruled by Begums till 1926 AD.
